Ruggiero to head IOC athletes’ commission

Gold Medalist Will Assume Role after 2016 Olympic Summer Games

Angela Ruggiero, who was a member of the U.S. Women's National Team program for more than 15 years, will head the International Olympic Committee’s athletes’ commission after the end of the 2016 Olympic Summer Games.

Ruggiero has served as an IOC member since 2010. Her storied hockey career featured a gold medal at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games, silver medals in 2002 and 2010 and a bronze in 2006.

She was a world champion four times and claimed a silver medal in six IIHF Women's World Championship events as well.

She was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame as well as the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.

Ruggiero's new post will serve as a liaison between the IOC and athletes. She will also join the IOC Executive Board.

Ruggiero is currently serving as the chief strategy officer for the Los Angeles Olympics bid for the 2024 Games.
