Back for More: Each of the top seven scorers from last year’s USA Hockey Select 16 Player Development Camp are competing at the Select 17 camp this week, led by Brannon McManus (Team Royal), who paced all skaters with 11 points (5G, 6A). Jonathan Bendorf (Team Gray) and Erik Urbank (Team Red) followed close behind, tallying nine points apiece, while Cole Guttman (Team Gray), Sam Walker (Team Royal), Jacob McGrew (Team Red) and Mick Messner (Team Columbia) all finished camp with eight points.

The top goaltender from the Select 16 camp last year, Gabriel Vinal, is also back as a participant in this week’s action as a member of Team Forest. Vinal will look to repeat last year’s performance, which saw him post an impressive 1.20 GAA and .959 save percentage.

Whirlwind of a Week: For the parents of Team Orange’s Tyce Thompson, this week has been highlighted by noteworthy on-ice accomplishments for both of their sons. In addition to Tyce being selected to compete in this week’s Select 17 camp, the Thompson family was also able to witness their oldest son, Tage, selected by the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft (No. 26 overall) Friday night in Buffalo, New York. Tage, a hulking 6-foot-5 forward, recently completed his freshman season at the University of Connecticut and was a participant in last year’s USA Hockey Select 17 camp.

Both Thompson brothers have the privilege of gaining insight from their father, Brent, who is currently head coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders. Before joining the coaching ranks, the elder Thompson enjoyed a lengthy professional playing career that spanned nearly 15 years.

Camp’s First Shootout: Team Gray's 3-2 opening-day victory over Team Kelly was the first of this year’s camp to be settled in a shootout. With the score knotted at two after the conclusion of regulation play, Gray’s Charlie Dovorany buried the lone shootout goal to secure the 3-2 win. Between the pipes, Jacob Kucharski denied all five Kelly shooters.

NHL Bloodlines: Gold’s Jacob Modry is the son of former NHL defenseman Jaroslav Modry. While Jacob was born in the United States, his father is a native of the Czech Republic, growing up there before moving to the U.S. for his North American playing debut in 1992. Jaroslav was chosen No. 179 overall in the 1990 NHL Draft by the New Jersey Devils and went on to appear in a total of 725 NHL games from 1993-2008 with New Jersey, Ottawa, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas and Philadelphia.
