Michigan native to begin duties in late June

USA Hockey announced today that Alyssa Girardi (Dearborn, Mich.) has been named the 17th recipient of the Brian Fishman Internship. Girardi’s experience will include 12 months in the communications division at USA Hockey’s national office in Colorado Springs, Colorado, beginning in June, with the second 12 months of the internship spent in the communications department at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program in Plymouth, Michigan.

The Brian Fishman Internship is awarded annually to an outstanding college graduate pursuing a career in athletic communications. It was established in 1999 in honor of the late Brian Fishman, who served as the manager of communications and marketing for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. He died unexpectedly on Jan. 7, 1999, at the age of 28.

“Being selected as the Brian Fishman Intern is an incredible honor, and I’d like to thank USA Hockey and the Fishman family for the opportunity,” Girardi said. “Hockey is my passion, and I hope I can carry on Brian’s legacy through this internship by emulating his enthusiasm and dedication to the game.”

Girardi’s responsibilities will include assisting with various communication projects, event promotions and publishing initiatives, including USA Hockey Magazine.

Girardi, who will graduate from Michigan State University in May, currently works for the Detroit Red Wings as a public relations assistant. Some of her duties include writing press releases and features, handling game-day responsibilities and assisting with department initiatives, including donations and charitable requests.

The Michigan native previously spent time within the communications divisions at USA Hockey’s national office and USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, where her roles included improving functionality of U.S. National teams’ websites, helping execute social media messaging and compiling information for player bios and media guides.

Girardi's experiences also include a public relations internship with the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins and two seasons as a staff writer for MiHockeyNow.
