The U.S. has met Russia in the championship game of the last two major international tournaments. The U.S. defeated Russia, 2-1, in overtime to win the 2015 World Sled Hockey Challenge title and 1-0 to claim the gold medal at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.

The two teams also met in the semifinal round of the 2013 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships, where the U.S. won, 2-1. Both teams went on to medal, with Team USA earning silver and Russia claiming bronze.

In the 2013 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships, the U.S. recorded three straight shutouts in preliminary-round play before defeating Russia in the semifinals to advance to the gold-medal game for the third consecutive world championship. The U.S. fell short of the three-peat, however, as Canada defeated the U.S., 1-0.

Over the last three IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships, the U.S. has claimed two gold medals (2009, 2012) and one silver medal (2013) while outscoring their opponents, 43-11, to amass a 10-2-1-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record. In 36 tournament games, the U.S. holds a 20-2-1-13 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record and enters the tournament seeking a sixth-straight tournament medal (gold: 2009, 2012; silver: 2004, 2013; bronze: 2008).
