Kaley Mooney Hat Trick Helps Lead Team USA in Victory over Host Country Spain

GRANADA, Spain—Kaley Mooney (Pittsburgh, Pa./Miami University) scored three times, and Molly O’Neil (Aurora, Colo./Colorado State University) scored twice to help lead the U.S. Women’s National University Team to a 9-1 victory over host country Spain today at the 2015 Winter World University Games.

Team USA took the lead just 1:58 into the first period when Emily Ford (Glastonbury, Conn./University of Vermont) wristed a shot past Spain goaltender Oihane Tedone. Caleigh LaBossiere (Acton, Mass./University of Massachusetts) then notched a power-play goal to extend the U.S. lead. Just 1:45 later, O’Neil netted her first of two goals in the frame to make the score 3-0. Mooney picked up the fourth goal of the period, while O’Neil tallied the fifth.

In the second stanza, Spain scored its only goal of the tournament to make it 5-1. Team USA responded quickly when Hayley Williams (Crete, Ill./Miami University) extended the lead to 6-1. Then Mooney notched back-to-back goals—the first a short-handed tally and then a power-play marker—to complete her hat trick and give the U.S. an 8-1 lead. Madison Smiddy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Penn State University) wrapped up the scoring with a goal at 16:56 of the period.

Though the U.S. sustained pressure throughout the third period, Spain held Team USA off the scoreboard to keep the deficit at eight goals. For the game, Team USA outshot Spain 49-2.

With the win, the U.S. Women’s National University Team (1-0-0-2; W-OTW-OTL-L) finished preliminary-round play and will next play in the relegation round. Time and opponent are to be determined. Check USAHockey.com for updates.
