With the day off, Team USA visits the West Edmonton Mall

Tuesday, February 3 – Edmonton, Alberta
Day 5

Team USA did not skate today. After breakfast, the squad left Leduc via bus for the West Edmonton Mall and arrived just after 11 o'clock. The largest shopping mall in North America kept the team entertained for nearly six hours with its stores, dining venues and world-class attractions.

THE SPECS
The 5.3 million square foot mall is equivalent to 48 city blocks and receives approximately 30.8 million visitors a year. With more than 800 stores, over 100 dining services, and several world class attractions, it would take three 24-hour days to visit each one once.

NUMBER ONE
According to its website, the West Edmonton Mall holds records for:

  • World's largest indoor amusement park
  • World's largest indoor triple loop rollercoaster
  • World's largest indoor lake
  • World's largest indoor wavepool
  • World's largest parking lot

THE ATTRACTIONS
The West Edmonton Mall does more than attract shoppers thanks to its attractions, including:

  • Ed's Rec Room: boasts a variety of fun activities like billiards, tenpin bowling and over 40 arcade-style games
  • Galaxyland: originally called "Fantasyland," the park features 24 rides and attractions, including the Mindbenders, the world's largest indoor triple loop roller coaster
  • Galaxy Quest 7D Experience: a digital theatre that gives customers the experience of a roller coaster and the excitement of an interactive shooting gallery
  • Ice Palace: an NHL regulation sized ice rink that was once used by the Edmonton Oilers for practice during the 1980s.
  • Miniature Golf: in addition to Professor WEM's 18-hole adventure golf course, the mall includes a glow-in-the-dark 18-hole miniature golf course called Dragon's Tale.
  • Santa Maria: an exact replica of Christopher Columbus' flagship sits in the indoor lake located in the Deep Sea Adventure area.
  • Scotiabank Theatre: a 13-screen theatre that allows moviegoers to watch today's best blockbusters in IMAX 3D.
  • Sea Life Caverns: located in the Deep Sea Adventure section of the mall, the underground aquarium is home to more than 100 species of fish, penguins, reptiles, sea turtles, sharks, amphibians and invertebrates.
  • Sea Lion's Rock: adjacent to Se Life Caverns, the Sea Lion's Rock is where four California sea lions perform daily shows.
  • World Waterpark: the 4.9-acre park includes an indoor wave pool, a "Caribbean Cove" play park, and 17 unique play features and waterslides, two of which are 83 feet high.

STAFF PUTT CHALLENGE ENDS IN TIE
The U.S. National Sled Hockey Team staff divided into two teams of three for a round of Professor's WEM's 18-hole miniature golf course. Team Cortese -- consisting of general manager Dan Brennan, assistant coach Guy Gosselin and athletic trainer Mike Cortese -- held the lead for most of the match. On the 17th hole, however, Team Sauer -- including head coach Jeff Sauer, media contact Jon Gomez and team physician Mike "Doc" Uihlein -- made it a one-stroke game on the 17th hole thanks to Doc's hole-in-one. With Team Sauer closing the 18th hole one stroke less than Team Cortese, the match ended in a tie. Commenting on the result, coach Sauer said, "It was about the journey, not the result."

PAULS THE DIRECTOR
When his playing days end, two-time Paralympic gold medalist Josh Pauls may have a future in television after spending the day documenting the team's trip to the mall. The video (featured above), includes behind-the-scenes clips of the team, including an interview with goaltender Steve Cash.
