CALGARY, ALBERTA — The U.S. Women’s Under-22 Select Team won its opening contest against Canada in the 2014 Under-22 Series. Dana Trivigno (Setauket, N.Y.) and Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Mich.) each tallied a goal, while Alex Rigsby (Delafield, Wis.) stopped 26 of 27 Canadian shots, finishing the game with a .963 save percentage.

"We had a lot of energy tonight and it showed in how we played,” said Ken Klee, head coach of the U.S. Women’s Under-22 Select Team. “I thought we had good composure and awareness which we benefitted from.”

The U.S. opened the scoring midway through the first, when Emily Pflazer (Getzville, N.Y.) won a battle along the boards in the neutral zone and passed the puck to Trivigno at the blue line. Trivigno’s took a shot from the right cirlce and it deflected off a Canadian defenseman and over the shoulder of the goaltender and in.

In the second stanza, on the power play, the U.S. cycled the puck low into the offensive zone and Darkangelo stepped up from the goal line, tapping the puck in the side of the net on a feed from Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) for the 2-0 lead at 17:05.

At 11:45 of the third period, Canada’s Blayre Turnbull made it a one-goal game.

The U.S. held on in the final half of the period for the 2-1 final.
