Girls Select U18: Day One Recap

The first games of the 2014 USA Hockey Girls’ U18 Player Development Camp were played on July 11 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.

In the opening contest, Team Gray scored a 2-0 victory as goals were tallied by Dana Rasmussen and Caitlin Schneider for Team Gray. The goalie tandem of Shannon Ropp and Evdokia Castonguay gained the shutout for Team Gray with a combined total of 16 saves in the game.

In game two, Team Black chalked up a 3-1 win over Team Gold. Team Black’s Darby Melia and Jacqueline Kaasa had first period goals to make it 2-0, before Gold’s Alyssa Gorecki broke the shutout with a first period marker. In the second period, Black’s Jessica Bonfe completed the game’s scoring. Maddie Rooney and Sonjia Shelly combined for 17 saves in the game for Team Black

The action continued with a 2-0 win by Team Red over Team Purple. Taylor Wenczkowski scored the game winner in the first period and Team Red’s Kassidy Anderson added the second goal in the OT session. Rebecca Dutton and Sydney Scobee earned the combined shutout with 20 saves in the game

Team White won its first game of the camp with a 3-1 victory over Team Royal.  Goals by Madison Truax and Ryan Little gave Team White a 2-0 lead in the first period before Team Royal’s Rebekah Kolstad scored her squad’s lone goal in the second period. The game was completed by an empty net tally by Team White’s Rebecca Gilmore in the closing minute of play

The first day was capped with a 0-0 deadlock between Team Blue and Team Pink.  The goalie pair of Gianna Meloni and Jenna Brenneman had a total of 20 saves for Team Blue, while Team Pink’s Adysen Cohen and Mary Turner combined for 16 saves in the tie game.

The eighth annual Hockey Weekend Across America, presented by CCM, will be staged nationwide Feb. 20-Feb. 22. More information on the celebration will be coming in the weeks and months ahead.
