The Goon is Hooked on Hockey

Q-and-A with James Goon

“Goon” might not be the most pleasant name on the back of a sweater, but James Goon, of Phoenix, Ariz., is anything but a dirty player. That’s a good thing, because he’s also the youth hockey director at Arcadia Ice Arena and a strong proponent of USA Hockey’s American Development Model.

USA Hockey caught up with the longtime player, coach and fan to talk about his passion and the importance of hockey, no matter how old the player.

USA Hockey: Goon – that’s quite a name for a hockey guy. Does the name resemble the type of player or coach you are?

James Goon: My name does not represent how I play or coach! I had a twin for that when I played.

USA Hockey: How did you first get into hockey?

James Goon: I got into hockey because my parents watched it. When I turned 3 years old, me and my brother bugged our mom to play. She took us to our local rink, and from then, our family was hooked on hockey.

USA Hockey: When did you decide to become a coach? What interested you?

James Goon: I started coaching five years ago because I wanted to give back to the program I grew up playing in.

USA Hockey: Are you also an ADM instructor? What does that include?

James Goon: I am an ADM instructor. It entails teaching kids the fundamentals and fun.

USA Hockey: You must believe in the ADM if you are that dedicated to teaching its principles. When and how did the ADM grow on you?

James Goon: The ADM grew on me because it's about development and developing the love of the game. Hook the player for a lifetime, not just a year or two.

USA Hockey: Do you feel there are good opportunities for adult players to learn the game, even if they’ve never played before?

James Goon: At our rinks, we offer an adult first program and introductory league to give these adults, who are fans, a place to play and understand the game better.

USA Hockey: Do you think it’s important for adult players to stay involved with the game, whether it’s playing, coaching or just being a good hockey parent?

James Goon: It is super important for adults to be able to learn and play to grow the hockey community.

USA Hockey: What does hockey mean to you? And what do you try to pass on to the kids (and adults) that you coach?

James Goon: Hockey is a great sport with great people – and I try to teach them to have fun.
