Game Day: USA vs. Germany (Prelim Round)

Today's Contest

The U.S. National Under-17 Team continues preliminary round action versus Germany at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Puck drop is slated for 1 p.m. EST. The game will be played at the Emera Centre Northside in North Sydney, Nova Scotia. Team USA won its first contest, 5-1, over Russia, while Germany fell to Canada's Team Ontario, 8-1.

Brendan Warren (Carleton, Mich.) had his hand in three goals yesterday afternoon in the win over rival Russia. Noah Hanifin (Norwood, Mass.), Michael Floodstrand (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Jack Roslovic (Columbus, Ohio) scored one goal and added one assist each, while Michael Lackey (Washington, D.C.) held Russia scoreless until the third and turned aside 17 of 18 shots. Team USA outshot Russia, 60-18.

Mitchell Marner scored three goals and Dylan Strome notched one goal and added two assists, as Canada's Team Ontario trounced Germany, 8-1, Sunday afternoon. Ontario scored back-to-back goals at 4:26 and 7:10 to open the game before Germany's Jakob Mayenschein responded to cut the lead in half. Ontario would score the next six goals to run away with the game. Troy Timpano and Ben Blacker shared time in net, kicking out 20 shots in the win. Germany's Cody Brenner faced 42 shots, stopping 34.

Match-Up History

Team USA faced Germany in the preliminary round at the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge hosted by Winnipeg, Manitoba. Henrik Samuelsson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored three goals at the PCU Centre in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, as the Americans defeated Germany, 4-1. Team USA scored 35 seconds into the game when Samuelsson lit the lamp for the first time. Germany struck back on the power play, but Samuelsson's second gave the U.S. back its lead at 4:06. Two goals in the second period sealed the victory for Team USA. Miles Koules (Los Angeles, Calif.) netted the other goal for the U.S. Collin Olson (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 21 saves in net.

News and Notes

  • Noah Hanifin wore the "C" as team captain in the game yesterday versus Russia. Luke Kunin (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Zach Werenski (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) served as assistant captains.
  • Team USA claimed third place in last year's tournament after back-to-back second place finishes (2011, 2012). The U.S. won the tournament in 2010 and has now placed in the top three for seven consecutive years (2006, 2008-13). No tournament was held in 2007.
  • The U.S. enters the tournament having captured first place three times (2001-02, 2010) and second place four times (1999, 2008, 2011-12).
  • All 22 players on the roster come from the U.S. National Under-17 Team that is part of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program based in Ann Arbor, Mich.
  • The 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge includes two pools of five teams. Pool A consists of teams from the Czech Republic, Pacific, Quebec, Sweden and West. Pool B consists of teams from Atlantic, Germany, Ontario, Russia and the United States.

Sweden scored one goal in each period, while the Czech Republic managed to get just one shot past Felix Sandstrom, as the Swedes beat the Czechs, 3-1. Linus Olund, John Dahlstrom and Oliver Erixon netted goals for Sweden, while David Kase tallied the lone goal for the Czech Republic.

Behind the play of Maxime Fortier (1-2), Jeremy Roy (1-2) and Nicolas Roy (0-3), Canada's Team Quebec completed a comeback over Team Pacific, scoring the game-winning goal at 15:07 of the final frame. Quebec scored the first two markers at 3:53 and 6:42 of the opening period. Pacific stormed back and netted three consecutive goals, including the only two goals of the second, to seize the lead, 3-2, before Quebec came right back to win the game.
