Fourth Annual Sled Classic Huge Success

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The fourth annual USA Hockey Sled Classic, presented by the National Hockey League and hosted by the Pittsburgh Penguins, took place last weekend at CONSOL Energy Center, Robert Morris University Island Sports Center and Blade Runners Ice Complex in Pittsburgh, Pa. The field included a record 16 teams, each affiliated with an NHL club.

The event is part of the third annual Come Play Hockey Month, a joint effort of USA Hockey and the NHL.

Sunday's (Nov. 24) three championship games were held at CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins. In the 'A' Division, the Buffalo Sabres edged the Dallas Stars, 3-2, in a shootout. The Washington Capitals blanked the New York Rangers, 3-0, to capture the 'B' Division. Finally, the Nashville Predators took home the 'C' Division crown by defeating the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-1.

Additional NHL clubs that sponsored teams included the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins. Each sled hockey team represented its affiliated NHL club by wearing official NHL licensed jerseys with local club marks and logos.

NOTES: The Colorado Avalanche hosted the inaugural USA Hockey Sled Classic in 2010. The Colorado Avalanche Sled Hockey Team won the four-team tournament … In 2011, the Philadelphia Flyers held the event in Vorhees, N.J., where the Buffalo Sabres sled hockey team took first place among nine teams … In 2012, the Buffalo Sabres put on the tournaments in Williamsville, N.Y., with the Dallas Stars winning the 'A' Division and the Washington Capitals capturing the 'B' Division ...
