U.S. Hockey Legend John Matchefts Passes Away

Olympian John Matchefts (Eveleth, Minn.) died Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo., at age 82.

Matchefts attended the University of Michigan, totaling 57 goals and 74 assists during his college career. He later represented his country at the 1955 IIHF Men's World Championships and won a silver medal at the 1956 Olympic Winter Games before coaching the Thief River Falls (Minn.) and Eveleth (Minn.) high school teams. He also coached at Colorado College from 1966-71 and Air Force Academy from 1972-86 and was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
