Parker to Coach 2013 U.S. Men's Select Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Jack Parker (Somerville, Mass.), who for 40 years was the head coach of the Boston University men's ice hockey team, will serve as head coach of the 2013 U.S. Men's National Select Team that will compete in the 2013 Deutschland Cup, it was announced today by USA Hockey. In addition, Ben Smith (Gloucester, Mass.), who served as the head coach of the U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team on three occasions and is currently a scout and advisor for U.S. National Teams for USA Hockey, will be the team's associate head coach, and Mike Bavis (Boston, Mass.), former associate head coach of the Boston University men's ice hockey team, will serve as assistant coach.

The Deutschland Cup will be staged Nov. 8-10 in Munich, Germany, and include teams from Slovakia, Switzerland, Germany and the United States. The U.S. participates in the event in odd numbered years.

"We're excited to have an outstanding coach staff, led by Jack Parker," said Jim Johannson, assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. "Together they bring more than 80 years of coaching experience which will be a tremendous asset for our team."

Parker retired from his position as head coach of the Boston University men's ice hockey team in March with his 40-year career spanning from 1973-2013. While at BU, he accumulated an 897-472-115 record to place him third all-time among NCAA coaches in wins. Parker guided the Terriers to three NCAA national titles (1977, 1995, 2009) and 24 NCAA tournament appearances, as well as 11 regular-season conference championships (three in the Eastern College Athletic Conference, eight in the Hockey East Association) and 11 conference playoff titles (four in the ECAC, seven in the HEA). During his career, Parker was named the Spencer Penrose Division I Coach of the Year on three occasions (1975, 1978, 2009).

Internationally, Parker served as head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team that competed in the 1996 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Massachusetts. He also worked as an assistant coach with the U.S. Men's National Team that skated in the 1995 IIHF Men's World Championship in Stockholm and Gavle, Sweden. Additionally, 23 players Parker coached at Boston University competed for the United States at the Olympic Winter Games, including four members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team that won the gold medal in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Smith served as head coach of the U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team three times (1998, 2002, 2006), leading Team USA to the first-ever gold medal awarded in women's ice hockey at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. He also guided the U.S. Women's National Team its first-ever gold medal at the IIHF Women's World Championship in 2005, and racked up five silver medals as a head coach in that tournament.

On the men's side, Smith has worked as an assistant coach at numerous events, including the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, two IIHF World Championships (1987, 1990) and three IIHF World Junior Championships (1985-87). In 1986, he worked on a staff that led the United States to its first-ever medal in the World Junior Championship -- a bronze.

Smith, who was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009 as part of the 1998 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team, was an assistant coach under Parker at Boston University for nine seasons (1981-90).

Bavis served as the associate head coach under Parker at Boston University for three seasons (2010-13) after 11 years as an assistant coach on the BU staff. While coaching the Terriers, Bavis helped guide the program to a national championship in 2009, as well as eight Beanpot titles and two Hockey East championships (2006, 2009). Additionally, Bavis has coached at numerous USA Hockey Select 15, 16 and 17 Player Development Camps and has been involved with the Mass/USA Hockey Satellite Training Program.

As a player, Bavis was a four-year standout at Boston University from 1989-93, helping the Terriers to four straight NCAA tournament berths, including an appearance in the 1991 NCAA title game. He also aided Boston University's run to three Beanpot championships and one Hockey East crown.

Bavis spent two seasons in the professional hockey ranks following his collegiate career before returning to Boston University to join the coaching staff in 1998-99.
