2013 Winter World University Games Rosters Taking Shape

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- USA Hockey today annouced the initial rosters for both the Men's and Women's National University Teams that will compete in the 2013 Winter World University Games. The event is scheduled to take place Dec. 10-21, in Trentino, Italy.

The U.S. teams are comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association. The final rosters will be named in October.

The men's roster is highlighted by numerous ACHA award winners, including forwards Thomas Krysil (Leominster, Mass./U.S. Naval Academy), a two-time All-American, and John Olen (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./University of Illinois), an All-Rookie Team member last season; defensemen Phil Wendecker (Grand Rapids, Mich./Davenport University), a First-Team All-American, and Jordan Young (Care Creek, Ariz./Arizona State University), an All-Rookie Team selection in 2012-13; and goaltender Wyatt Waselenchuk (Minot, N.D./Minot State University), the reigning ACHA Men's Division I Player of the Year.

The women's roster features two players that participated in the 2011 Winter World University Games, including forward Ramey Weaver (Eagle River, Alaska/Robert Morris University), the 2011-12 ACHA Player of the Year, and goaltender Katie Vaughan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn State University). Additionally, several ACHA award winners were also selected, including forwards Cassie Catlow (Saundertown, R.I./University of Rhode Island), the reigning ACHA Division I Player of the Year, Alisha DiFilippo (Hope, R.I./University of Rhode Island, a Second-Team All-American pick, and Kristin Griebe (Clinton Township, Mich./University of Michigan), a First-Team All-American.

Notes: All men's games will be played at the Gianmario Scola Ice Stadium in Alba de Canazei, while the women's games will be played in Pergine ... Scott Balboni (State College, Pa.), who served as head coach of the Penn State University men's ice hockey club team from 2006-11, will serve as head coach of the 2013 U.S. Men's National University Team after having previously worked as an assistant for the 2009 and 2011 Winter World University Games. Dan Phelps (Livonia, Mich), head coach of Adrian College's men's ice hockey team, and Sean Hogan (Tucson, Ariz.), head coach of the men's ice hockey team at the University of Arizona, will serve as assistant coaches. Phelps was an assistant coach with Balboni during the 2011 Games ... Mo Stroemel (State College, Pa.), director of hockey operations for the Penn State University women's ice hockey program, will serve as head coach of the 2013 U.S. Women's National University Team after having previously worked in that same capacity at the 2011 Winter World University Games. Rob Blackburn (Whitmore Lake, Mich.), head coach of the women's ice hockey team at the University of Michigan, and Kristen Wright (Broomfield, Colo.), head coach of the University of Colorado women's ice hockey team, will serve as assistant coaches. Both coaches are making their first appearance as assistant coaches with Team USA
