HANNOVER, Germany -- The 2002 United States National Selects shut out Switzerland, 1-0, today in the final game of the 2002 Deutschland Cup, being held at the Preussag Arena from Nov. 8-10. The win gave the U.S. a 2-1-0 record in its inaugural appearance in the tournament and a second-place finish behind Canada, which recorded a 2-0 victory over Germany earlier in the day to go a perfect 3-0-0.

The only goal of the game came early in the third period, as both teams had a player in the penalty box. Chris Luongo (Detroit, Mich.) fired a shot from the point, and Ted Drury (Boston, Mass.) redirected the puck past Swiss goaltender Lars Weibel 2:06 into the period. Chris Tancill (Livonia, Mich.) recorded an assist on the goal.

The U.S. National Selects made the lead hold up despite being outshot in all three periods. Two penalties by Switzerland in the final eight minutes of play hurt its chances of scoring the equalizer.
Chris Rogles (St. Louis, Mo.) notched his second shutout of the 2002 Deutschland Cup, stopping 29 shots today and all 62 shots he faced in the tournament. Weibel finished with 20 saves in the loss.
