Under-18 Team Rolls Over the Czech Republic in Second Game at Five Nations Tournament

JONKOPING, Sweden - J.T. Compher (Northbrook, Ill.) scored two goals and added an assist, as the U.S. National Under-18 Team rolled over the Czech Republic, 5-1, at the 2013 Five Nations Tournament here today at Kinnarps Arena. With the victory, Team USA's record improves to 1-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L).

"It was a total team effort today," said Don Granato, head coach of the U.S. National Under-18 Team. "We have a lot of work remaining in this tournament and will now focus on a tough matchup tomorrow."

Compher opened scoring for the U.S. at 12:54 of the first period. Anthony Louis (Winfield, Ill.) and Steven Santini (Mahopac, N.Y.) registered assists on the play. With just over a minute remaining in the frame, Tyler Motte (St. Clair, Mich.) doubled the Team USA lead. Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) assisted on the marker.

The Czech Republic netted a power-play goal to cut the U.S. lead in half at 5:39 of the second stanza. Shane Eiserman (West Newbury, Mass.) answered at 10:05 with Compher and Connor Clifton (Matawan, N.J.) earning the helpers. Compher struck for the second time to put the Americans up, 4-1, heading into the final frame. Keaton Thompson (Devils Lake, N.D.) assisted.

Sean Malone (West Seneca, N.Y.) added to the U.S. advantage at 6:19 of the third period. Hamilton and Scott Savage (San Clemente, Calif.) combined to set up the score. Team USA outshot the Czechs, 24-5, in the frame and skated away with a 5-1 victory.

Evan Cowley (Evergreen, Colo.) kicked out 17 shots in the win for the U.S., while Rene Svoboda stopped 49 of 54 shots in the loss for the Czech Republic.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team continues tournament play tomorrow (Feb. 9) against Russia. Puck drop is scheduled at 6:30 a.m. EST at Jonkoping Arena.
