Metro West Game - Varsity vs. Waubonsie (10/31/09)

Varsity defeats rival Waubonsie Valley 5-2

The Naperville North Varsity team fought consistently throughout all three periods on Halloween night, scoring two goals in the first period, one in the second and finally another two in the third to finish off the Waubonsie Valley Warriors at a final count of 5-2 for their fifth consecutive win in a row.

Max Obriecht and Alex Goff helped to lead the Huskies to victory with two goals each. Scoring was opened by Obriecht off an assist from Ben Burbridge a few minutes into play and Goff took advantage of the momentum five minutes later to bury another puck, this one assisted by James Benda. When the first period ended the Warriors already trailed 0-2 and North had no intention of letting up. The next fifteen minutes only served to strengthen Naperville’s hold on the game when Alex Goff scored his second goal half way through the period on a power-play oppertunity with dual assists credited by the referee to Carson Smith as well as a non-existent #16, coincidentally a number belonging to the retired Anthony Regole.

Waubonsie battled hard to put an early third period goal past North net minder Nick Vittori, but their momentum was quickly averted when Max Obriecht scored a second goal of his own only a few minutes later after some fluid puck movement involving Jon DiMatteo and Matt Bloodgood, restoring the Huskies’ three point cushion at 4-1, where it remained until late in the game. With three minutes left in play, Joe Collins raised the bar even further when he picked off a rebound from Peter Stachowicz’s shot from the point and jammed it past the Waubonsie goalkeeper, and though the Warriors still closed the scoring with a minute left in play, they had no hope of overcoming North’s tremendous lead so late in the game and the Huskies successfully continued their five game winning streak with a 5-2 victory over their local rivals.
