Monroe Multi-Sports Complex 2009-10

As usual, there is no shortage of rumors around youth hockey, and the situation at the Monroe Multi-Sports Complex is no exception.  It is important that we set the record straight as we close in on House registration (Sat. July 25) and on Travel team tryouts.

The MMSC is open for business in 2009-10, but only on one ice surface.  Based on our projected team count, there will be sufficient ice for all MHA teams.  In addition, the earliest and latest ice times aren't much different than they have been over the last couple of years.

Any rumors to the contrary that you may have heard or read about are totally false.

About the MHA

The MHA was founded in August, 1998, roughly six months after the opening of the Monroe Multi-Sports Complex. We are a member in good standing of the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) which is both an Affiliate and single-state District of USA Hockey. We are part of MAHA District 2 that includes local Associations in both Monroe and Wayne Counties.

Governance of the MHA is through an 11-person Board of Directors who are elected to two-year terms with right of succession. At least 5 members are elected each year in March. The new Board reconfigures itself into 11 specific positions. These include a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer, plus an Association Registrar and six additional offices titled Director or Manager. A complete list of Board members is located on the "MHA Board" page.

In October 2003, the MHA was granted permanent 501(c)(3) status by the Internal Revenue Service. This followed a mandatory five-year period during which the organization was working under "tentative approval" while justifying permanent status. Our fiscal year runs July 1 through June 30 of the following year. We file IRS Form 990 on a timely basis every year, a copy of which is available for public inspection in the MHA Office at the Monroe Multi-Sports Complex.
