Hero Sports is a nonprofit in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, that is dedicated to providing opportunities for people with disabilities to play sports through specialized adaptation for their needs. With Sioux Falls being home to a Veteran Affairs hospital and two major healthcare systems (Sanford Health & Avera Hospital), the city is a hub for adaptive sports for disabled individuals.

In an attempt to introduce sled hockey to the community, Hero Sports utilized USA Hockey’s sled lending program and partnered with Sanford Health Adaptive Sports to conduct a sled clinic for participants aged 11-55 with varying degrees of injuries. With over 30 attendees, the clinic demonstrated the need and desire for a sled hockey program in the Sioux Falls area.

Through the Sled Hockey Development Grant, presented by Labatt Blue, Hero Sports will be able to take the next step in establishing a sled hockey program by purchasing sleds, sticks, uniforms and other essential items for the sport. Led by individuals with experience running hockey programs, leagues, specialty clinics and development programs, Hero Sports is excited about the next steps of establishing sled hockey roots in Sioux Falls.
