Disabled Athlete of the Year

Created in 2005, the USA Hockey Disabled Athlete of the Year Award annually recognizes outstanding perseverance and dedication by a disabled hockey player who demonstrates the ability to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of excellence both on and off the ice.

Eligibility Requirements and Selection Process

This award is available to all disabled ice hockey athletes regardless of age, race, ethnicity, gender or gender identity, religion, sexual orientation or socio-economic background.  The Nominee must be registered as a player in good standing with USA Hockey and participating on a disabled team/program during the most recent playing season.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The nominee must demonstrate:

  • Good sportsmanship on and off the ice
  • Served as a role model for other athletes
  • Demonstrated a hard work ethic to improve their playing ability
  • Possesses good character qualities that illustrate support of teammates and others in the community
  • If in a leadership role, provides positive support to others on the team/program

PROCEDURE/TIMELINE

  • To nominate an athlete, please complete this online form.
  • The Chairperson of the USA Hockey Disabled Section shall appoint a subcommittee that will review all of the nominations and recommend three finalists.  These finalists are shared with the USA Hockey Executive Director, who, in collaboration with the Disabled Section Chairperson, selects and notifies the awardee.
  • The recipient will be invited to the USA Hockey Annual Meeting.  USA Hockey will provide airfare and hotel.
