The Millage vote is only 26 days away and we need your help!!  We have 500 yard signs that need to be displayed all over Wexford County and we’re asking for your help in getting them out there.

 Here’s the plan:

  • Everyone who is able to help, please meet at the Wex this Saturday at 1:00pm at our rallying point (cider and donuts for all)
  • From there we will determine who will cover what area throughout the county
  • We are asking for a small donation of $3 (or more) per sign from anyone who is willing to donate.  We do not expect you to go up to every door and ask for money.  If you know the person and want to ask, great, but it’s not a requirement in order to put the sign in the yard.  The cost of the yard signs came to over $1600, so we’re just trying to recoup as much as we can to cover that cost.
  • We would like to see the signs in as many visible business locations as we can – so ask anyone you know that owns a business to help.
  • Kids…feel free to wear your hockey jerseys to show your support!
  • Any other ideas are welcome.

Thank you for your continued support to help keep the Wex a viable part of this community.  Although the Commissioners decided not to close the doors in May, we still want to see the millage pass so that this type of issue does not come up again!

Hope to see you all there this Saturday!

Attention Potential Hockey Players

CAHA October 2008 Calendar

Welcome to the CAHA Website!  Our 2008-2009 season is underway and if you have been reading the news lately, you may have heard the discussions of the Wexford County Civic Center.   This has been negative press, but we assure you that the Wex and all the events scheduled there will be honored and with all of our hard work, it will continue into the future.  Sign your kids up for hockey, come to our tournaments, and sponsor our program.    We are not going anywhere and we welcome you to join us in sending a message to our county commissioners.

Thanks to everyone who attended the County meeting on Wednesday.  It was obvious that our presence there had an impact on many of the Commissioners.  In the end, they took a vote on whether to close the Wex in May 2009 or keep it open…and they voted NOT to close the doors in May. We are looking forward now to the November 4th Election.  Get out the word to vote yes on the Wexford County Recreation Millage proposal.

Hello CAHA family:

In a nutshell, the annual cost to operate the Wex is approximately $400,000.  Revenue generated per year (on average) is around $320,000, so the county has to contribute roughly $80,000 per year for operations expenses.  $46,000 of that goes toward a compressor payment that will be paid off within the next year or two.  That leaves a balance of approximately $34,000 that the county must contribute to keep the Wex running with the current list of scheduled events in place.

These are the things the Wex provides space and equipment for:  ENJOY!

What I see here are a whole host of events and activities for our community to take part in. Without the Wex, where else could these events take place?   Is there another facility in the county that offers 20,000 square feet of space with bleachers to seat 1800 and additional seating for 900?  Is there another facility in the county with an ice arena, locker rooms with showers, and a concession area?  Is there another outdoor facility with grandstands, outdoor lighting and a sound system in the county?

Please join us in voting YES for the Wex on November 4th.  We will be developing banners, buttons, yard signs and more for you to show your support.  Stay tuned for more information.  And if any of you have any other ideas, please feel free to contact anyone on the CAHA board.  You can find our numbers and emails on the CAHA website.

Sincerely,

Jeanine Taylor, CAHA

A letter from CAHA President Mike Stebbins

Welcome returning and new hockey families. While it may seem odd to begin thinking about "next season" it’s really just right around the corner. Our goal is to continue to provide kids a safe, healthy hockey experience while keeping the cost down. We were very successful last season because of all of you – yearbooks, tournaments, citrus & pizza sales, etc. In fact, once it was all said and done many families finished the year with a credit to begin this season as a result of their individual and team fundraising!

On another note, you may have read recently that Wexford County residents will vote on a county-wide recreational millage.  From a recent Cadillac Evening News article:

“The county is asking for a 0.25 millage request from 2008 to 2011. Of the amount raised, 61 percent or about $150,000 would be dedicated to the Wexford County Civic Center. The remaining 39 percent, or about $100,000, would be dedicated to recreation programs in Buckley, Manton and Mesick if the request is passed. For someone owning a $100,000 home with a $50,000 taxable value, the request equates to about $12.50 per year in additional taxes.”

Whatever your politics are this is a direct threat on our ice rink.  A no vote will at a minimum be a public vote of “no confidence” to the future of the arena.  Worst case scenario is that the rink could be shut down leaving us with no place to play.

I’m not into scare tactics or grandstanding.  I do, however, have a responsibility to make sure everyone understands this issue ahead of time and has the chance to act.  Please exercise your democratic right.  I urge you to:

  • Vote yes on 11/4/08 to support the rink – it’s not much money, but it is a big deal
  • Tell the County reps how important the rink is to you and your family.  click here for your contact info.
  • Let everyone you know what is going on and urge them to vote YES
  • Write a letter to the Cadillac Evening News – Power of the Pen!

I could go on about what a good thing we have between CAHA and the Wex.  In short, we have nearly 100 kids staying active, bring multiple teams and thousands of $$ into the community every weekend, hold many tournaments throughout the winter filling hotel rooms and spending money, and constantly receive high marks from visitors about what a great rink, association, and community we have.  This assault on our arena is irresponsible and risks killing the golden goose.  Get active!

Respectfully,

Mike Stebbins,CAHA President

SUMMER SHOOTER TUTOR CHALLENGE RULES

Shoot as many pucks as you can any way you want between July 7th and September 21st 2008

-Twisted wrister    - Wicked slapper     -  Top shelf snap shot   - 5 hole

In an attempt to encourage players to practice and develop their shooting skills during the off-season we have set up prizes for players who practice shooting pucks.

Before any prizes are distributed this year, I must have a signed copy of the shooting log returned to me.  If the form is emailed to me-it does not need to be signed.  You can send me the log as each level is obtained, or at the end of the challenge.  Pucks must be used for squirt and above.

For the goalies, if you cannot get someone to shoot on you, work on bouncing tennis balls off from a wall and blocking them.  Also work on flexibility (stretching), juggling, and balance (balance boards can be made using scrap wood).  As long as an adequate time is spent working on these skills, awards will be given (please document your time).
