SOUTH DAKOTA SELECTS

March 6, 2009

Time is approaching to give that shot at selects.  A few important things need to be noted.

1.                  A Code of Conduct form link has been added.  If your parents are not coming to tryouts, you need to bring a completed form along.

2.                  Both boys’ tryouts and girls’ camp will be held in Huron.  The girls format has been changed to a camp format with an emphasis on player development.  It is hoped to change to focus from “making” a team, to improving skills.  Qualified players will still have the opportunity to attend the District Player Development process.

3.                  Business commitments have resulted in Noelle Needham stepping down as the head coach.  She hopes to help, but couldn’t give the necessary time.  Erin McMahon of Huron as coach, with Keith Muhl and Mark Bullington as coordinators will assist in the administration of the process.

4.                  Our Hotel sponsor, Best Western of Huron (605)352-2000 once again looks forward to having its hockey friends for the weekend.

TEAM SOUTH DAKOTA

March 6, 2009

Tryouts are coming!

Give it a shot.  The worst thing that can happen is you don’t make the team after player in a weekend of hockey with the best players in the State.

The tryout schedule is posted on the State website.

If you are one of the select few to make the team, you’ll join a great group of guys and coaches for some of the best hockey you’ll play in High School.  Tenatively, there will be a weekend of games on the weekend of April 4 & 5, 2009 in Jamestown, North Dakota against Team North Dakota.

Then, the week after Easter, it’s off to Chicago.  Tuesday, April 14, 2009 is a travel day, and the game schedule is as follows:

            Game 1            4/15/2009        8:00 a.m.          Team Connecticut

            Game 2            4/16/2009        2:00 p.m.          Team Washington

            Game 3            4/17/2009        7:30 a.m.          Team Kentucky/W. Va.

            Playoffs            4/17/2009 – 4/19/2009

(Version 1/28/2009)

What is it?

1)      The beginning of the development process culminating in the Northern Plains Development Camp, and qualification for the USAHockey National Select Festivals. (“Festival Process”)

2)      An opportunity to play with the best kids from across the State in spring and summer AAA hockey. (“AAA Selects”).

When is it?

The selection process starts with tryouts by birth year age groups in Huron and Mitchell on the following dates:

            March 28 and 29, 2009: Boys ‘96s and ‘95s: Girls 19U, 16U and 14U

            March 28 and 29, 2009: Boys ‘94s, ‘93s, ‘92s/91s

Who picks?

With the assistance of experienced evaluators, the Selects program head coaches, and the age group head coaches will pick the teams, and the alternates for each division.  No parent will be involved in the evaluation or selection of players involved in their child’s level.  Efforts are being made to recruit evaluators from outside the state association.

After tryouts, then what?

1)      Each age level sends players organized as a team to the Alliance Cup in Minot, ND which is the second step of the “Festival Process” after our tryouts.  More information is available at www.ndaha.org under the “player development” tab, and “district selects.”

2)      Some players will then be selected by the district evaluators in Minot to move on in the “Festival Process.”  Information is available on the www.ndaha.org site and will be provided to those who advance.

3)      Upon completion of the “Festival Process”, interested players that made the Alliance Cup, and alternates from tryouts will be organized into the “AAA Selects” by age year, and based on interest will enter various tournaments in the Midwest.

Who are the coaches?

Dave Smith and Noelle Needham are the boys’ and girls’ program head coaches.  They will be the head coaches for the top age group kids.  Coaches for the various teams will be drawn from across the State.  Commitments have already been received so that each group’s head coach will be an experienced and committed coach; including varsity head coaches.  No coach or assistant coach will be a parent of a player at that age group nor will they have been a coach of that age group during the season (except for Noelle and Boys’ Varsity Coaches).  Players advancing in the “Festival Process” will receive the benefit of coaching from top level coaches from the entire district.

How much does it cost?

1)      Tryout expense is $100 for administration costs, evaluator expenses and a tryout jersey to keep.

2)      Successive weekend expenses such as coaching expenses and tourney fees for “AAA Selects” will be the responsibility of the team members participating and will be “divied” up pro-rata.

What about Team South Dakota and the Chicago Showcase?

South Dakota will once again be sending a team of players to the national showcase tournament in Chicago.  Only Junior and Senior boys (birth year is irrelevant) who played in league this year are eligible to participate.  Tryouts will be held in conjunction with the 92/91 tryouts.  The dates of that tournament of April 14 through April 19, 2009.  Dave Smith will be the head coach of that team.  More information will be sent out shortly.

TEAM SOUTH DAKOTA

Once again, South Dakota has entered a team in the Chicago Showcase.  This 25th annual  showcase is a tournament sponsored by the Illinois Association of USAHockey.  Teams are organized by State or District, and bring together all-star teams from across the country.  The tourney dates are Wednesday, April 15, 2009 to Sunday, April 19, 2009.

Team South Dakota will be comprised of players from across the State.  All high school juniors or seniors who played on a SDAHA Varsity or Junior Varsity team are eligible to tryout.  Tryouts will be held in Huron on the weekend of March 27 through 29, 2009, although the specific times have not be determined.  More information will be available through the balance of the season.

Approximately 20 players, and up to 5 alternates will be selected at the tryouts.  Exceptions to the tryout process are available through a process called a waiver for injuries, or hockey related absence.  Information concerning a request should be directed through you local’s select representative, Selects Head Coach Dave Smith, or Selects Chair Bump Anshutz.

Some things to keep in mind:

1.                  Save your school absences.  Don’t find yourself short on permitted absences after tryouts.

2.                  Know when your prom is before tryouts!

3.                  If you are involved in spring athletics, discuss it with your coach sooner rather than later.

Finally, don’t sell yourself short.  You may look down your bench, and see yourself as your team’s 5th, 6th or 7th skater.  You may look on pointstreak and see yourself down the scorers’ list, or goalkeepers’ list.  You may see the colors on your jersey and worry politics may get in the way.  If you do that, your assumptions are wrong.  Head Coach Dave Smith’s only charge is to put together a team, according to the rules of the Showcase, that will be as competitive as possible, and comprised of players looking to advance their careers.

Save those dates!  More information will follow.
