Forty (40) Girls Beat the Heat in Ft Myers!
If there was any question, it was answered at the Ft. Myers Skatium - Girls hockey is alive and well in Southwest Florida! The first in a series of FREE clinics for girls of all ages and skill levels was held on Sunday, July 26th. With 40 girls - yes 40 - in attendance. The participants were led in a variety of skating, passing, shooting and small area games drills. All the instructors were former Florida girl hockey players now playing NCAA Women's hockey at various colleges. Thank you to all the volunteers and especially to Joe Sanders and the Skatium staff for hosting the event.
New skills and new friends were made and great strides taken towards putting together regional recreational teams within Florida, as well as solid interest in forming Team Florida Girls Hockey tournament teams at U-12, U-14, U-16 and possibly U-19. NEW this season, USA Hockey has added a TIER II division to girls hockey. This means more opportunity for girls to participate in district playoffs with a chance to advance to a National Championship.
This is just the start. Two more FREE Clinics/Tryouts are planned in August. Saturday, August 15 at RDV Sportsplex in Orlando from 4:15 - 7:15 p.m. and Sunday, August 16 at the Ice Zone in West Palm Beach from 3:15 to 6:15 p.m.
Come out in August and beat the heat! All girls up to the age of 19 are welcome to attend regardless of skill level and playing experience. The clinics are FREE and all girls are welcome to attend as many as mom and/or dad can drive you too! For more information e-mail teamfloridagirls@aol.com
