November 20, 2009: JV UPENDS LIBERTYVILLE 6-2The Gators got scoring from 4 players, led by captain Jordan Ross (3goals, 1 assist).
Ross scored first on assists from Jamie Stortz and Michael Kernan. Joey Bower made the score 2-0 after taking a beautiful feed from Jack Scott.
Ross and Steve Eklund each scored in the second period, giving the Gators a 4-0 lead.
Libertyville fought back to make the score 4-2 after two. The Gators struck quickly in the third, Jack Willett hustling from center ice, followed linemate Paul Napholz into the zone and roofed a rebound to CLS a 5-2 lead and momentum. Ross finished off his hat trick a few minutes later to wind up the scoring.
Ross, Bower (1g, 3a) and Zach Isrow (2 assists) paced the offense combining for 10 points.
Matt Petlick had a strong 12 save performance in net for the Gators for the win.
November 19, 2009: VARSITY GATOR OFFENSE TAMES MANIACS
The CLS varsity team took a 1-0 lead into the second period before erupting with 9 more goals in the final 28 minutes of play.
Kenny Hall had his best night as a 2.5 year regular on the Gator squad, registering nine points (3 goals, 6 assists). Scottie Stalo added 3 goals and 2 assists and Jacob Thiel scored his first two career metro goals to go along with 2 assists.
Defenseman Danny Koopman had 3 assists to help pace the offense. Sophomore Jordan Ross scored his first varsity goal on a nice feed from Hall and Chris Hollich tallied one goal late in the second period to complete the scoring.
Eric Bartos turned away 17 shots to register a shutout. The Gators are back in action again on Sunday night vs PREP.
November 16, 2009: VARSITY OFFENSE EXPLODES OVER WEEKEND
The Gator offense erupted for 24 goals this weekend beating Latin 13-0 and Grayslake 11-1. Everyone that played in both games registered at least one point on the weekend, with 14 players registering at least 2 points. The line of Kenny Hall (6g, 2a), Eric Purcell (1g, 4a) and Scottie Stalo (1g, 6a) combined for 20 points on the weekend, while the line of Mark Greenberg (4g, 4a), Chris Hollich (1g, 4a) and Joey Bower (2g, 3a) added 18 points. Bret Graser had 3 goals over the course of the weekend, Jacob Thiel added 2 assists and Bryan Gillam had a helper to round out the offensive surge.
The defense even got into the scoring this weekend combining for 15 points (4g, 11a). In addition to helping out on the offensive end, the blue liners (Max Hamrick, Will Davies, Danny Koopman, Brian Lichterman, Sean Craig and Michael Kernan) kept the opposition away from the Gator net allowing just 18 shots over 84 minutes of play.
Ben Allison stopped 10 shots to get the win over Latin and Eric Bartos turned away 7 shots in the victory over Latin.
Also of note over the weekend, the Gator hockey teams had the opportunity to welcome both the Frosh/Soph cheerleaders to the JV game on Saturday and then the Varsity cheerleaders to the varsity game. A special thanks to Cindy Lichterman for arranging the festivities.
One final thank you to Rich Wasilewski for bringing his Leafs Mite team to the game Saturday to cheer on the Gators.
November 1, 2009: GATOR JV AND VARSITY SWEEP BG/H/W
The JV got things started for South on a positive note by defeating BG/H/W, 6-1 in the first game of the double header.
Jamie Stortz scored a hat trick and set up two other goals for a 5 point game. Steven Eklund, Alan Kay and Jordan Ross also scored for the Gators. Brandon Franco added two assists in the winning effort.
Griffin Moore was solid in net stopping 24 of 25 shots.
The Varsity team shut out BG/H/W, 6-0 in the second game.
Eric Purcell led the way with a goal and 4 assists. Kenny Hall added 2 goals, Mark Greenberg had a goal and an assist, Scottie Stalo and Joey Bower contributed 2 assists. Bret Graser got the Gators off to a quick start scoring 2:29 minutes into the game. Will Davies scored the second goal on a nice passing play fron Purcell and Stalo.
Eric Bartos got the shutout in net for South, kicking out all 25 shots that he faced.
October 31, 2009: VARSITY OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION TOO MUCH FOR HUNTLEY
The Gators took a close game and over the course of 7 minutes and 15 seconds put up 7 goals to run over Huntley/Lake Zurich on Saturday afternoon.
South scored every imaginable way, 4 times on the power play, once short handed and 6 times while at even strength.
Mark Greenberg (4g, 1a) and Joey Bower (1g, 4a) had 5 points and Kenny Hall added 3 goals and an assist to help pace the offense. Eric Purcell (1g 2a) and Scottie Stalo (1g and 2a) each contributed 3 points. The Gators got offense from their defensemen as well, Will Davies (1 goal), Danny Koopman (2 assists), Sean Craig (2 assists), Michael Kernan (2 assists), Max Hamrick (1 assist) to give the South blue liners 8 points.
Ben Allison picked up his 2nd Metro Central shutout by stopping all 13 Huntley shots.
October 24, 2009: GATOR JV HOLDS OFF HUNTLEY TO GAIN A POINT, 4-4
Jamie Stortz and Steven Eklund each had 4 point games to pace the offense and Kevin Steltzriede stopped 25 Huntley shots to lead the Gators.
South held a 4-1 lead midway through the 3rd period, when a rash of questionable penalties put Huntley on the power play 4 times, including a 5-3 advantage.
Huntley finished the game on a power play for the final 90 seconds of the game, but the Gator penalty killers managed to kill off the final minute and a half to preserve the tie.
October 20, 2009: GATOR VARSITY BEAT JACOBS
The South varsity team improved their record to 3-0 in the Metro Central Conference by defeating rival Jacobs High School, 7-3 on Tuesday.
Eric Bartos stopped 18 shots, many of them coming at key stretches in the game when the outcome was still in doubt.
The first period ended 1-1, the lone Gator goal coming from Joey Bower, assisted by Mark Greenberg and Chris Hollich.
CLS jumped back out in front in the second period on a goal from Hollich, assisted by Greenberg and Bower, but Jacobs came right back and tied the game again on a power play goal.
The South offense turned it up a notch from this point on and scored 3 unanswered goals, the first coming from Greenberg off of a nice feed from Michael Kernan, Hollich added his second of the game, assisted by Greenberg and Bower. Scottie Stalo finished the scoring in the second period, assisted by Kenny Hall and Danny Koopman.
Jacobs was able to close the gap to 5-3 during a two man power play, but Stalo was able to score his second of the game assisted by Hall and Will Davies to give the Gators a 3 goal lead. Sean Craig scored a power play goal, assisted by Davies and Hall to close out the scoring. South out shot Jacobs 42-21.
The Gator varsity travel to the Leaf Centre for a Halloween matinee against Huntley.
