Welcome to the USA Hockey Officiating Program
Instructor Presentations Web Site
This web site is intended to help you with the organization of your officiating seminars and instruction of ice hockey referees.
Today, the contents of this web site are PowerPoint presentation files. These presentations have been voluntarily submitted to USA Hockey from referee associations, individuals and other sources. While the content of each presentation has been generally unmodified, all presentations have been formatted and edited so that they all have the same look and feel. Additional editing has been done for validity and consistency in some cases. USA Hockey desires that you use these presentations as you see fit and modify them in any way that you wish in order to fit your style of presentation and seminar schedule.
You will notice that there are several presentations on any one subject. This represents material that has been gathered from different sources. Some files may be shorter or longer than others; some contain different elements of content. Please feel free to modify any of these presentations for your individual use. Have Fun!
The presentations are stored in two different formats:
- The PowerPoint Presentations format contains the .ppt files that are the actual working form of the presentations. You must have Microsoft PowerPoint 97 or later on your computer to work with these presentations. Just open the .ppt file in PowerPoint and you are ready to modify or show the presentation. Once you make any changes, be sure to rehearse all presentations in Slide Show mode prior to your seminars!
- The PowerPoint Slide Shows format contains .pps files for PowerPoint slide show format. No PowerPoint experience is necessary to run these files, and PowerPoint is not needed on your computer to run these shows. These presentations automatically enters slide show mode when you open it on any computer. These files are the same presentations that are contained in PowerPoint Presentations folder; however you cannot edit them in any way you must use each slide exactly as it has been produced.
There will be other electronic documents in this web site as well, which contain items such as logos, rink diagrams and other stuff you may find interesting for building your presentations. Keep checking in for new and updated materials - and not just in PowerPoint, but in many other electronic forms as well.
The materials provided for you here have been lovingly prepared by a committee with a huge interest in seeing that high quality and very consistent presentation material is readily available to Seminar Instructor staffs everywhere. We are all instructors. And we care about providing the best-quality tools to our peers around the country. So if you see something you like or something that is not quite right, let us know. Your suggestions will keep the quality of these materials very high. The members of the Officiating Program Electronic Teaching Materials Committee include:
Harvey T. Cohen
Supervisor of Officials and NY District Database Coordinator
Rochester, NY, E-mail: hcohen@rochester.rr.com
Harvey is the committee chairman and he provided direction on the final format of the presentation and organization of this web site. Harvey collected information and suggestions from the District Referee's in Chief and from Bob Hayden and Matt Leaf.
The members of the committee also include:
Mark Verplaetse
Centerville, MN, E-mail: mark_verplaetse@candle.com
Jeff Scherer
Phoenix, AZ, E-mail: scherer.jeffery@mayo.edu
Bob Fyrer

Mark, Jeff and Bob performed extensive formatting and final editing of each presentation; Mark also arranged the materials for production onto a CD that was distributed in the Spring of 2002 to attendees at all Instructors Camps held this year and to the District RICs at the Annual Congress.
The USA Hockey Officiating Program Electronic Teaching Materials Committee would like to thank everyone who has donated their presentations and time in the creation of this web site and the CD. Many people have spent long hours at their computers in the creation of this material. While this list is by no means complete we would like to thank the following people:
- The Illinois Hockey Officials Association (IHOA) for the contribution of their seminar material.
- Gary Robinson, Kevin Upton, Leonard Edling and Kevin Schmaltz for their hard work in putting many of these materials together.
- Don Olynyk for his help in obtaining some materials and his ideas.
- Chris Smith and Todd Watts at USA Hockey for their guidance and contributions.
- A special "Thank You" is extended to Candle Corporation, El Segundo California for providing time and materials in the duplication of the CD's!
- We know that there are many others that need to be acknowledged and as we can compile their names, we plan to recognize their hard work right here.
What's Next?
The committee will continue to collect and create new presentations for your use. Any contributions will be greatly accepted. It is the intention of USA Hockey Officiating Program and this committee to make these and other presentation materials available to you on the USA Hockey Web Site.
This committee will continue to update the web site with material for you to use for your seminars. If rules or procedures change, we will endeavor to incorporate those rules and procedure changes in the presentations. In addition, we hope to provide you with tips and techniques for creating your own presentations and methods for delivery. Be sure to check this web site often for changes!
While PowerPoint is a great teaching-tool product, also many other electronic teaching aids are valuable. These may include word processing documents, spreadsheets, audio files, video files, pictures, etc. The committee will continue to collect your donations, for which you will receive credit, and put them into our standard format. Anything we receive will complement the materials we have here for you. And on behalf of USA Hockey and our peers around the country, we are grateful for any and all contributions.
There are no restrictions in copying these files for your use. Nobody will profit from any royalties from the distribution of these materials. However, you must remember to give the proper credit to the authors for their hard work when presenting this material in public. This is a matter of courtesy for your fellow officials.
The USA Hockey Officiating Program and this committee hope that you have a great time delivering your seminars this year. Please direct any feedback to any committee member.
Thanks, and have fun!
